The Truth About What’s in your Tap Water

When’s the last time you took a drink of water from the tap? Was it today? Yesterday? A couple of months ago? Regardless of whether it was two minutes ago or two years ago, there’s something you might want to know…

Tap water is full of impurities.

What’s in our Tap Water?

I want to start by saying, this isn’t meant to scare you, but more so to act as a wakeup call for all of us!

When looking at the surface, tap water contains impurities like lead, microplastics, and other harmful bacteria. In water’s travel from the deep roots of the Earth’s soil, all the way to the faucet pipes, there are several opportunities for contaminants to enter the water. Take microplastics for example- these tiny toxic particles shed off of things like water bottles and other plastic materials. Plastic may be everywhere nowadays, but we sure don’t want it in our water supply!

Another harmful substance that has been found in our tap water is traces of pharmaceuticals. When taking medications, it’s natural for our bodies to excrete it out; however, in doing this, the excreted medicines ultimately enter our water supply… This leads to harmful substances found in antidepressants, blood thinners, antibiotics, pain killers, and more, all appearing in our tap water.

Oestradiol and its Effects

An extremely hazardous substance now being found in tap water is Oestradiol. This substance is found in contraceptive pills. Following the idea outlined above, Oestradiol is being released into our water supply anytime anyone taking contraceptives showers or flushes the toilet. Out of all things found in our tap water, this may be one of the worst… Oestradiol can disrupt your endocrine system - the glands system that produces, regulates, and releases hormones in your bloodstream. When your endocrine system becomes imbalanced, this allows your body to manifest diseases easier- obesity, diabetes, cancer, etc. To learn more about where you can find endocrine disruptors, check out Tips to Reduce the Presence of Endocrine Disruptors in Home.

So, where do we go from here…?

First let’s start with where we don’t go from here… Plastic water bottles are not the answer! It may seem like an obvious solution- if we can’t drink from the tap, why not just buy cases of water at the grocery store, right? Wrong.

Not only is this option bad for the environment, but it’s also harmful towards you! Plastic releases bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that mimics estrogen and is equally dangerous as consuming unfiltered tap water.

Glass bottles are a safe option, but we know they’re an expensive choice.

Activated Carbon Filters

After a lot of research and working to find the best, most affordable option for everyone, we found activated carbon filters to be the best choice. To keep it simple, when water is poured into a carbon filter, a process called absorption is what is responsible for filtering out the contaminants. Ultimately, the carbon material binds and traps the hazardous substances, only allowing the clean water particles to pass through.

There’s plenty of options on the market- if you go on Amazon and search them up, you’ll find hundreds of solutions! Any one will do!

One more thing- depending on the carbon filter you choose, there will be a specific lifespan on it, requiring a fairly regular change. Just be sure to check the directions on your new filter to see how long it’ll do its job until needing a refresher!

What to do about those Hormonal Imbalance Symptoms

Remember when I mentioned that big word above- Oestradiol? When consuming too much of this estrogen steroid hormone (through instances like drinking unfiltered tap water), the body can enter a state of hormonal imbalance. This can lead to symptoms like anxiety, fatigue, poor sleep cycles, and more. You can find even more information on hormone imbalance at Hormone University.
